4 Top Sources of Free Business Ideas

Where to Get Your Creative Juices Flowing

By , About.com Guide

Ideas are cheap – there are thousands of “idea” websites. But obviously the ideas aren’t that good – or else the publishers would be using them. Ideas alone aren’t what you need. You need good ideas. Ideas to get more ideas flowing. Ideas of substance, that you can make your own.

Here is a set of my four favorite idea sites. These sites are different for two reasons:

  • They publish ideas as an actual business model. Publishing ideas is their (profitable) idea.
  • The ideas aren’t just random lists – they are functioning, actual businesses.

So here they are - the top 4 websites for business ideas.

1) Business Opportunities Weblog Network

My favorite idea website is, hands down: Business Opportunities Weblog Network.

Dane Carlson has created a literal flood of ideas. More than 18,000 to be exact. Starting more than 9 years ago, he started posting just 10-40 per month. It has increased to an unbelievable 200-300 new ideas every month!

If this site can’t get your creative juices flowing, I’m sorry, but nothing will.

Sign up for his updates, or follow him on Twitter or on Facebook.

2) Uncommon Business

Another interesting site is Uncommon Business - Unusual Business Ideas That Work.

Similarly focused on unique and interesting ideas, this site has been publishing great ideas for more than four years. This isn’t just a list of possible ideas. These are news reports of actual functioning and profitable businesses.

From Uncommon Business: Uncommon Business is a blog about people who make money online selling unusual, strange and sometimes bizarre things or provide curious services. This isn’t “One Hundred And One Ideas For Your Homebased Business” – only real, working businesses with URLs provided, so you can do further investigation on your own.

A recent story was: Bar On Wheels - The PedalPub.

3) BusinessOpportunity.com

BusinessOpportunity.com: This one is new to me – but looks like a promising set of ideas. You can search from three criteria:

  • Industry
  • Investment
  • Location

The majority of ideas are packages for sale. But the site is free – so enjoy seeing whats available. It’s a good way to see trends and angles.

From BusinessOpportunity.com: BusinessOpportunity.com is a leading source for finding business opportunities, distributorships, licensee opportunities and small franchises specific to your needs.

4) Entrepreneur.com - Biz Opportunity Section

Entrepreneur.com is a powerhouse in the business world – and they have a comprehensive business opportunities section. The section on opportunities is divided by category and then further by segments of those categories. Each of these segments give rough start-up costs, some franchise companies in those niches and many have “How to” articles.
